Eurocodes: Building the future

Cambodia

Cambodia is currently considering reviewing their building codes and standards. The E-READI Eurocodes Dialogue provides support in awareness-raising on Eurocodes in Cambodia.

The 24-25 March 2022, the Eurocodes Awareness Workshop Cambodia took place online, due to the pandemics restrictions, following the request of the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction and the Institute of Standards of Cambodia. The workshop stirred great interest, which was displayed by the large number of participants (110) and several questions raised.

The workshop’s objectives were the following:

  • Present the concept of Eurocodes as a standardisation framework (targeting mainly national authorities) and also as advanced technical design codes (targeting engineers/practitioners);
  • Present a case study from a non-EU country and AMS that has successfully implemented the Eurocodes in the national regulatory framework;
  • Facilitate exchange of views, knowledge and information between the EU and ASEAN stakeholders on Eurocodes and their benefits;
  • Present information on the second generation of the Eurocodes and their links to the European Green Deal;
  • Facilitate use of the Eurocodes in design practice through technical discussion on their basic design philosophy, actions on structures, design of concrete and steel structures including geotechnical issues;
  • Present the process and support available for countries willing to adopt the Eurocodes.

The importance of design standards and benefits of Eurocodes were presented, and success stories provided real examples for Cambodia on adopting and implementing Eurocodes in non-EU countries. The interest of Cambodia was a beacon for more ASEAN Member States to express their interest in the adoption of the Eurocodes.
