Eurocodes: Building the future

Brunei Darussalam

    Brunei Darussalam, which has traditionally relied on British Standards, has expressed interest to embrace Eurocodes, with the help of E-READI's transition-focused support.

    With over 100 attendees, the workshop 'Towards Increasing Awareness of Eurocodes in Brunei Darussalam', held online in June 2022, effectively demonstrated Brunei's dedication to implementing Eurocodes as national design standards. Presentations on successful Eurocodes adoption in non-EU countries provided valuable lessons and insights for Brunei Darussalam. Among the topics of particular interest to the participants were:

    • The transition process to Eurocodes.
    • Preparation of National Annexes.
    • Determination of Nationally Determined Parameters for Eurocodes.
    • Understanding related costs, resources, and adoption timeframe.

    As follow-up of the workshop,

    • a survey was launched by the Brunei PUJA Academy to gauge the knowledge and readiness of the Bruneian Construction Industry on moving to Eurocodes;
    • a taskforce was set up to assess the suitability of adopting Eurocodes in Brunei Darussalam; the first meeting of this taskforce in August 2022 was chaired by the Acting Director of Technical Services of the Public Works Department, Ministry of Development.

    The workshop also showcased the Temburong Bridge, the first major construction project in East Asia designed to the Eurocodes. The bridge is a 27 km long dual two lane highway crossing over the Brunei Bay and connecting the relatively isolated Brunei district of Temburong to the other three Brunei districts and to the country's airport and ports. The design is one of the first applications of the Eurocodes to a fully concrete cable stayed bridge.
