Abstract

This series of Designers' Guides to the Eurocodes provides comprehensive guidance in the form of design aids, indications for the most convenient design procedures and worked examples. The books also include background information to aid the designer in understanding the reasoning behind and the objectives of the codes. All of the individual guides work in conjunction with the Designers' Guide to Eurocode: Basis of Structural Design. EN 1990. EN 1995, or Eurocode 5, describes the principles and design rules to be used for the design of timber and wood based materials in building and civil engineering structures. Designers' Guide to Eurocode 5: Design of Timber Buildings provides guidance on the interpretation and use of the main design requirements of Part 1.1. Common rules and rules for buildings, with additional guidance on the principles, requirements and rules of Part 1.2, Structural fire design. Reference to the UK National Annex to EN 1995-1-1 is included throughout and background information is provided as necessary to clarify the application, and any limitations of use, of certain design rules. A few points of clarification and amendments to EN 1995-1-1 are expected to be issued as a corrigendum and the authors have included in the guide some matters of significance to design that are likely to be incorporated in the changes to be made. This guide is essential reading for - civil and structural engineers - code-drafting committees - clients - structural-design students - public authorities in fact, everyone who will be affected by the Eurocodes
