Eurocodes: Building the future

Transfer of innovation

In the light of the Commission Recommendation of 11 December 2003, the JRC is collaborating with DG GROW and CEN/TC250 "Structural Eurocodes" on the transfer of innovation into standards.

The JRC justifies standardisation needs, concepts new standards, and publishes the JRC Report Series "Support to the implementation, harmonization and further development of the Eurocodes". The work programme of CEN/TC250 on the second generation of the Eurocodes envisages publishing of new pre-normative documents as JRC Report Series, before their publication as CEN Technical Specifications and their further conversion into ENs. The JRC reviews and edits this European Guidance. After a review and decision of TC250, the JRC publishes them as editor.

Besides being part of the CEN workflow, the JRC publications provide transparency to the work of CEN/TC250 and facilitate reaching European consensus on the common technical rules.

Initiation of new standards

JRC initiated work on new standards in important areas of structural design and supported the process of development of standards in these areas. The need of European standards regarding the use of glass products in civil engineering works was justified by the JRC in 2007 in the report "Purpose and Justification for New Design Standards Regarding the Use of Glass Products in Civil Engineering Works". As a consequence this innovative field of design was included into the requirements of Mandate M/515 to CEN.
