JRC Report: Eurocode 8: Seismic Design of Buildings - Worked examplesObjectivesParticipantsWorkshop presentationsAdditional Material |
The workshop "Eurocode 8: Seismic Design of Buildings" with worked examples was held on 10-11 February 2011 in the National Laboratory for Structural Engineering (Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil, LNEC) in Lisbon, Portugal. This workshop was the first training event organised at European level for the seismic design of buildings using Eurocode 8, following the successful workshop on "Bridge Design to Eurocodes" that was held in Vienna on 4-6 October 2010.
The workshop was organised and supported by the European Commission, Enterprise and Industry Directorate-General and Joint Research Centre, CEN/TC250, CEN/TC250 SC8, CEN Management Centre, the Member States and the National Laboratory for Structural Engineering (Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil, LNEC).
Opening addresses were delivered by Artur Pinto, Joint Research Center and Jean-Armand Calgaro, CEN/TC 250 Chairman. Keith Moyes, British Standards Institute, gave a presentation on the activities related to promotion of the Eurocodes to third countries.
JRC Report: Eurocode 8: Seismic Design of Buildings - Worked examples
This JRC Report document presents in detail the seismic design of a reinforced concrete and steel building following the Eurocodes. It summarizes important points of the Eurocode 8 for the seismic design of concrete and steel buildings including foundations, utilizing a common generic building as a basis. The building worked example was presented at the workshop "Eurocode 8: Seismic Design of Buildings", held on 10-11 February 2011 in Lisbon, Portugal. The workshop was organized by JRC with the support of DG ENTR and in collaboration with CEN/TC250/Sub-Committee 8 and the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC, Lisbon).

Objectives
This workshop with emphasis on worked examples contributed towards the transfer of background knowledge and expertise of Eurocode 8 (EN 1998 Design of structures for earthquake resistance) writers (CEN/TC250 Sub-Committee 8) to potential trainers at national level and Eurocode users.
The principal objectives of the workshop were to:
- transfer knowledge and information to representatives of key organisations/institutions, industry and technical associations in Member States;
- provide state-of-the-art training material, background information and worked examples to Eurocodes trainers and users;
- facilitate exchange of views, networking and cooperation.
Participants
Approximately 200 national delegates and lecturers were registered for the workshop. The delegates were representatives of national authorities, national standardisation bodies, industry, professional associations, research institutions and universities. The participants were delegates from the EU Member States, EU Candidate Countries and EFTA Member States, as well as from countries outside Europe (for example Algeria, Canada, Chile, Israel and Mexico among others .
