Design of Concrete Structures to EC2: Theory and Examples

This two-day course describes the Limit State Design theories and their application to reinforced concrete structures. It will then move on to examine, in particular, the requirements of EC2 and associated design models. Some comparisons with the current code BS8110 will be explore. The course includes design examples for a range of structural elements. To enable delegates to: Describe the background to Eurocodes and the Limit State Design method for structural design; Establish combinations of loadings on reinforced concrete structures using partial factors, e.g. permanent, variable and accidental action; Explain characteristic material strengths of structural concrete and partial factors; Establish the design procedure for structural phenomena on reinforced concrete at ultimate limit states (bending, shear, axial compression and their combinations) and serviceability limit states (cracking and deflection); Establish the design procedure for reinforced concrete elements, e.g. beams (rectangular and flanged), slabs (two-way and flat slabs), columns and simple foundations; Explain the requirements for the detailing of reinforcement in concrete.
