EC3 Understanding the Essential Principles

This 2-day course is aimed at all practicing engineers who would like to learn the essential principles of structural element and connection design in hot formed steel to EC3 Part 1.

The course introduces the concepts of limit state design before explaining in detail the methods employed by Eurocode 3 for designing members in bending, compression and tension. Load combinations, frame stability, brittle fracture and connection design are also covered in detail. These principles are applied to the design of beams, columns, frames and lattice girders through a series of worked examples and workshops.

The objectives of this course are:
- to introduce the concepts of limit state design and explain the load combinations for ULS and SLS;
- to provide information on the correct specification of steel grade and sub grade;
- to explain the principles of frame stability and how these are applied in EC3;
- to describe local buckling and the requirements for section classification;
- to provide details of how to design members subject to axial and flexural loadings including restrained and unrestrained beams, compression members and tension members;
- to provide details about connection design.
